The cross country season has come to a close and runners have arrived at the finish line. After months of hard conditioning, evening Wednesday races, and early Saturday morning meets, the season finished on Saturday, November 4th in Columbia at the State Championship Meet.

Throughout the season both the men’s and women’s team truly lead like Generals. The Lady Generals finished first in back-to-back meets. At the Canned Food Drive hosted by Hillcrest High School, the Wade Hampton girls placed first overall with four top fifteen finishes. The Lady Generals also placed first at the Cavalier Classic hosted by Dorman. Junior Lucas Wall has also had a very successful season for the Generals.

At the Upper State Meet, the Lady Generals placed third in order to qualify for State. Rebecca Ward finished 12th, Lydia Riordan 16th, and Flora Fadgyas 20th. The boys team just missed qualifying, however, Lucas Wall’s time was good enough to earn him a spot to compete for the individual title.

However, cross country is more than running. Cross country is screaming at the top of your lungs when a teammate runs past you. Cross country is eating bananas and granola bars while waiting to run. Cross country is long bus rides to meets at Dorman and Woodmont. Senior Maggie Pelton said, “I am going to miss the camaraderie of cheering on your teammates after the race is over.” Cross country is a family.

At State, Lucas Wall finished second in his event. The girls team finished 5th overall. Each runner made our school proud.
