When getting gas at Quiktrip or 7-Eleven, we get out of the car and pump our own gas. We do not think about our hands smelling like gas or the dangers of breathing the fumes in; we just pump our gas. Until January 1st, Oregonians have not had the pleasure of pumping their own gas since 1949. Recently, specially trained service attendants have pumped gas for the people in Oregon. Self-service gas stations were actually banned in Oregon and are still banned in New Jersey.

House Bill 2482 is a new law that lets retailers in counties with a population under 40,000 have self-service gas pumps. However, the ban of self-service gas stations still holds in counties larger than that. Most Oregonians are not affected by this, but the ones that were took their discontent to social media. One woman commented on a Facebook post, “I don’t even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian . . . I say NO THANKS! I don’t like to smell like gasoline!”

Oregon had banned self-service gas stations because of the hazards that come with pumping gas. First, pumping gas is obviously a health hazard and needs to be handled by trained attendants in order to reduce fire hazards. Second, parents often leave their children in the car while going to pay for their gas, creating a potentially dangerous situation. The only pro of this law is the comedic content Oregon gave to Twitter.
