Super Bowl LII drew lots of attention, calling for lots of finger food, chips and dip, and pizza at parties throughout the country. Televisions across the nation were turned to NBC and the age-old question still remained in the minds of viewers: Do more people watch the game or for the commercials and halftime show? This year, it seemed that not many people were watching either one. Ratings were low as the Eagles achieved a historic win. According to the Los Angeles Times, “The overnight ratings for the Philadelphia Eagles’ 41-33 win over New England Patriots on Sunday averaged a 47.4 rating, which is 3% below comparable numbers in 2017.” It is true that fewer people were watching this year, but were they really missing out?

The Halftime show this year wasn’t quite NSYNC, especially after Justin Timberlake’s Prince tribute created an issue between JT and Prince fans. The hologram-like projection of Prince seemed to upset many Prince fans because, according to a close personal friend of Prince, “Prince didn’t want to be hologrammed.” Apart from the show, entertainment seemed to be in short supply this year. It was not a complete fail, given the few golden commercials like the “Alexa loses her voice” Amazon commercial and the touchdown celebrations commercial, where Odell Beckham Jr. and Eli Manning reenact the final scene in Dirty Dancing. Even Tide had a good night of advertising, despite their recent dilemma with the so-called “tide pod challenge.” However, corporations like Diet Coke and Ram received very bad reviews and some heat on social media.

Altogether, the Super Bowl went on without any difficulties, except for Patriots fans. This year was definitely a year for the game and not the advertisements. Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl 2018 Champions.
