The energy is high when the varsity volleyball team steps onto the court, ready to play a great game fueled by hard work and collaboration. The Wade Hampton volleyball team is currently ranked number one in the region, along with TL Hanna whom they share their title with at the moment. The team has had a very successful season so far, improving 3-2 on the year and 2-0 on region play. They secured their spot on the leader board by winning 3-1 against JL Mann. The girls have won nine out of the twelve regular season games they have played so far. The team hopes to continue with their success and go further than last year. In a recent tournament at Eastside, the team placed second in the gold bracket, beating out Christ Church, Greenville, Wren, and Crescent High School.

The team’s fantastic camaraderie and teamwork have been an essential factor to their success. A variety of grades make up the team, though a majority come from eleventh and twelfth grade. When in action, spectators can see how close many of the girls are. Coach Hunter stated, “They all like each other. They’ve played together for years. Most of the group we have with us right now have played three, four or five years with the program. They’ve been together for a while, and they all really like each other and enjoy playing with each other.” At every game, they support each other and work together to form a dominant team and present themselves as a strong opponent to whomever they are facing. Players on the court and the sideline encourage their teammates and build off each others energy.

Last year, the team went to the playoffs but lost to Rock Hill, this year they hope to go further. Senior Madison Frederick said, “I hope that we are able to keep winning the rest of our games for the season because we have such a good chance of winning region this year and going to the playoffs. I know if we keep working as hard as we do now, we will be able to achieve this goal. Coach Large has told us from the beginning of the season that we can win a region title this year, and each game we win brings us a step closer to reaching that.” The team will play five more games before the playoffs, facing Easley, Greenwood, JL Mann, Woodmont, and Westside. They hope to see fellow students supporting them in the stands as they push forward. As Frederick said, “It’s also really encouraging to see our friends cheering and supporting us during this winning season.” The lady generals are ready to work hard and push through a fantastic winning season.
