Every day, eleven teenagers die as a result of distracted driving. Distracted driving comes in various forms, but the most common form is texting and driving. It does not matter whether someone is updating their Snapchat streaks or quickly responding to a text. They are at elevated risk of getting into an accident when they do so behind the wheel.

According to CBS News, nearly three-quarters of all drivers in a recent study admitted to consistently texting while driving. Many believe they can safely text and drive, but this does not seem to be the case, as nearly one out of every four car accidents are results of doing so. Junior Olivia Warlick believes that “A lot of teenagers think they’re capable of multitasking, but taking your eyes off of the road for even just a second can do a lot of damage.” People believe that, since they have done it before and have gotten away with it, they can continue to do it whenever they feel. Since they do not experience immediate repercussions for their actions, they see nothing wrong with consistently indulging in the same bad habits.

It does not matter how good someone thinks they are at multitasking. When they are putting other people at fatal risk when doing so, no amount of time spent on their phone while driving is justified. No DM from a friend, no Snapchat from a boyfriend or girlfriend, not even a text from a parent, is worth a human life.
