Imagine a house, a huge investment that has been lived in for years, being taken and claimed as someone else’s. How would that feel? “It would stress me out and I wouldn’t be able to get it off my mind,” answered Junior Kathryn Haswell. Georgia residents Janice Henson and her husband were returning home from their Christmas vacation when they found that the locks to their home had been changed. Shortly after trying tediously to open their locked door, a man in a wheelchair opened the door and told them to leave. “It is my home now,” he told the family, adding that he had a gun. When the police arrived on the scene, the trespasser threatened to shoot officers. The strange incident led to a five hour standoff with the Cobb County police and SWAT team, ending in SWAT members ramming down the front door to send in a robot to locate the man inside the house.

The strange house thief was identified as 26-year-old Nathaniel Jacob Canton. Nathaniel surrendered peacefully and was arrested on felony charges of first-degree burglary, terroristic threats, and a misdemeanor charge of obstruction. Police say that no gun was found and that Canton is being held in Cobb County jail with a $33,220 bond. Further investigations by police show belongings being moved and missing food, pictures were also scattered across the house and drawers had been emptied, as well as notes that Canton had written to the family, thanking them for the key and letting him live there.
