Real IDs Needed by 2020

If senior Emory Wyatt got a Real ID, it would look something like this. The only change from past licenses is a star in the upper right hand corner. NOTE- this is not meant to be a legitimate ID or to look anything like one.

In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act after a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission to heighten safety measures to prevent terrorist attacks and threats to federal facilities. This act mandated that every state create and make available new IDs that are harder to forge. Even though this act was passed fourteen years ago, South Carolina’s lawmakers “did not want to be forced into following a federal mandate,” so the state waited a long time before becoming compliant, according to The Post and Courier.

The Real ID is harder to obtain than a regular license because it requires more documentation to get one than it does to get a regular license. All South Carolinians must have this new form of identification by October 1, 2020 if they want to be able to board planes or enter federal buildings. Those under eighteen years old will not need a Real ID to get on a plane if they are with someone who has an acceptable ID. As for entrance to federal buildings, if someone does not have a Real ID, he or she can show their passport. Currently, DMV employees are worried that people will put off getting their Real IDs and everyone will be in line at the DMV next September. Some anticipate 6 hour lines.

Will the Real ID ensure the safety of air traveling and federal buildings? Senior Emory Wyatt gave her input: While it could be an effective way to keep federal building safer, it all comes down to the execution and regulation around the implementing of the ID… As far as safety is concerned, more documentation means more information known about those people obtaining the IDs. This could be helpful in the sense of helping identify potential threats, but it could also create a sense of discrimination toward those that have less documentation but are still present in the US.” Until this system is fully implemented, Americans will have to wait to experience how the system works to protect them.
