During August 2017, the world experienced a total solar eclipse. This eclipse was reported worldwide and was the first total solar eclipse in over three decades. Over the weekend, much of the Western Hemisphere was able to experience another great cosmological event: a super wolf blood moon. While the view was definitely not short of amazing, the symbolism and meaning usually go unheard of.

According to Space.com, a supermoon happens when the full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its orbit. This, as a result, makes the moon appear brighter and closer than normal. This, however, is only one part of a super wolf blood moon. Timeanddate explains in this article that a blood moon is a total lunar eclipse named because of the reddish tinge the Full Moon takes on when fully eclipsed. With all of this being said, the last part of the super wolf blood moon equation is the “wolf.” The wolf moon, as mentioned by Independent, is the term given to the January full moon each year, which was a name traditionally used by Native Americans.

With all of these types of moons coming together to form one big lunar masterpiece, it was definitely a sight to behold. Junior Colby Lister, an avid space enthusiast, witnessed the event for himself and was able to describe just exactly what it appeared as in the night sky: “It definitely lived up to its namesake. You could see it stand out so vividly with the reddish hue that is was giving off. It was even more significant with it being even bigger and brighter than usual.”

Since the recent super wolf blood moon, many images have been released showing off the true beauty of the event. With this event being such a rare view for most, it is certain that the image of this moon will be sketched into the memories of those who were fortunate enough to witness it.
