Jordan Peele has done it again. Since entering the horror genre with Get Out in 2017, fans and critics alike have been awaiting the release of his next project. Us certainly lives up to the hype. While not having a direct racial theme like Get Out, the film creates a terrifying atmosphere and eerie universe that makes you leave the theater wondering if the Tethered are actually real. In true Jordan Peele style, Us is filled with imagery and allegory. A central theme to Us is the duality of people and society. The Tethered’s red jumpsuits and single glove allude to Michael Jackson who Peele has called “the patron saint of duality.” The amount of hidden details and imagery in the film has led to fans scouring the movie for more.

The political message in Us is also very strong. The Tethered are an allegory for those marginalized and living in poverty in the United States. Even the name of the movie itself is rumored to link back to the United States. The creation of and purpose of the Tethered also ties into government corruption and control of the population in the most extreme way possible. Movies like Us are not only great for simple viewing pleasure, they are also essential to the discourse of our democracy by making statements about how our society functions and our government operates. Even for those not interested in political statements, Us is a great movie to go see. Senior Skylar Ellis stated, “It was odd and there is a good plot twist at the end. There is some controversy over her voice mimicking a special person though.” Us is a film that will be talked about for years to come. It is for everyone from thrill-seekers to film connoisseurs wanting to experience a cultural landmark.
