Will Smith was the king of the 90’s fashion world. His role as “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” influenced millions of young minds around the world. The vibrant colors and interesting clothing combinations made people second guess what they define as fashion; that the laws in such fashion they set upon themselves in a community could be broken. He has been called “The Michael Jordan of Television,” by pop culture news company Complex. From the first episode, it is clear that Will speaks and dresses different than anyone else on the show. In fact, his exact outfit in one episode perfectly displays Will’s influence on 90’s fashion, sporting an extremely bright yellow two tone hat with the bill flipped up, a matching baggy striped shirt, blue running shorts, and black and red Jordan 5’s. “He made being different in hip hop cool,” says senior Jordan Smith, who is heavily influenced to this day by the Fresh Prince’s style.

What made him so admirable in the show is not just the clothes he chooses to wear, but the overwhelming amount of confidence in which Will carries with him when wearing them. His sense of solitude from any regular style was natural for him, there was not an unoriginal bone in his body telling him to fall into any stereotype. He would dress how he liked whether others like it or not for the rest of his life. But it is not just clothes that separates him from the rest of the population, along with this individualism in the fashion world is a separation in the political and social world. Time after time, Will voices his opinion on different situations, usually playing the role as the good guy, the neutral, and the peacemaker.

Someone as influential as this in the fashion world should have released a clothing line by now, right? Well after 29 years from the first aired episode of “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” Will Smith has finally released a clothing line based on the show. Available until 10/14, the primarily athletic based clothing takes a more simple approach to the prince’s old style. The phrase “Bel Air Athletics” is stamped on almost every article of clothing in the line, making an appearance on every item from t-shirts to shorts.
