Climate change is a massive problem in our world today that has sparked a variety of activism and protests. People make signs and write laws encouraging us to make changes to our lifestyle in order to prevent pollution and to save the environment. This past week Jeff Bezos, founder, and CEO of Amazon, took an even more significant step by pledging to donate 10 million dollars to the cause. The CEO made this announcement through Instagram on Monday, where he calls climate change “the biggest threat to our planet.” The money will help start the Bezos Earth Fund. This fund will support scientists and activists in creating solutions for climate change. While he will initially donate $10 million, Bezos also pledged to start issuing grants for the project this summer.

While many people support Bezos’ efforts, there is also a group that thinks that he has not done enough. The group Amazon Employees for Climate Justice recently said in a statement on Twitter that “We applaud Jeff Bezos’ philanthropy, but one hand cannot give what the other is taking away.” Earlier this year, the organization signed a letter asking Amazon to ask them to take more steps toward preserving the environment. They called for Amazon to end contracts with oil and gas companies as well as stop supporting politicians who deny the existence of climate change. They also participated in a global climate walkout. In response to these actions, Amazon committed to using 100% reusable energy in 2023.

Jeff Bezos is the wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes. His estimated net worth is about 120.9 billion dollars. Due to his vast amount of wealth, Bezos had been criticized for not donating enough. While Bill Gates and Warren Buffet donate between 2-3% of their wealth to charity, Vox reports that Bezos only donates about 0.1%. As Emin Demirkilic states, “Jeff Bezos donating to climate change doesn’t show how much he cares about the environment. It just shows that he wants money and more people to buy stuff from Amazon. If he actually cared, he would have put a real portion of his money toward the cause.” Despite this, Bezos hopes that his donation to climate change research will help diminish the problem and improve the environment.
